Red Light Therapy

Red Light Therapy

Designed to Support the Rest of Your Plan

Not every treatment needs to be an event. Some of what keeps skin in good condition is quieter than that — consistent, gentle, accumulating slowly in the background while the more visible work happens elsewhere.

Red light therapy sits in that category. It is comfortable, requires nothing of you afterward, and is used at Radiance Aesthetics as a complement within a broader plan rather than as a treatment that stands on its own.

Dr. Sharon Lawrence, a physician board certified by the American Board of Surgery with advanced training in aesthetic technique, will tell you plainly where this treatment fits and where it does not. It is not a replacement for the treatments that produce structural change, and it is not presented as one here.

Patients visit Radiance Aesthetics from across North Arlington and the surrounding communities of Bergen, Hudson, and Essex counties.

Every plan begins with a Get to Know You Consultation.

Ready to Explore Your Options?

A Get to Know You Consultation is where your plan takes shape. Dr. Lawrence will assess your skin, discuss your goals, and give you a straight answer about whether red light therapy belongs in your plan.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy delivers specific wavelengths of visible red light to the skin. The light is absorbed by cells in the treated area, where it is understood to influence cellular energy production and activity. In skin, the interest centers on fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen.

There is no heat injury, no needle, and no disruption of the skin surface. This is the gentlest treatment offered at Radiance Aesthetics, and its gentleness is both its appeal and its limitation.

The goal is not to replace the treatments that change skin structure — it is to support them, in a way that asks nothing of your schedule or your recovery.

A note on what is and is not established. Red light therapy is an area of active research, and the evidence supporting it is meaningfully more modest than the marketing surrounding it. Studies suggest possible benefit for skin quality and appearance, but findings vary, effects are generally subtle, and results are cumulative rather than immediate. Devices delivering light for skin applications are regulated as medical devices, and individual devices carry their own specific authorizations — a general claim that “red light therapy is FDA approved” is not accurate, and you will not hear it here.

Radiance Aesthetics offers red light therapy as a complement to your treatment plan. Some patients notice a difference in how their skin looks and feels. Some notice no measurable change. Dr. Lawrence will not tell you otherwise in order to sell you a series.

What Concerns May Red Light Therapy Support?

Red light therapy is used as a supportive treatment for:

What red light therapy does not do. It does not remove pigmentation, resurface the skin, tighten significant laxity, restore volume, or soften lines caused by muscle movement. It does not substitute for microneedling, peels, or neuromodulator treatment. It is not a treatment for any medical or dermatologic condition, and it is not offered as one. If your primary concern is dark spots, texture, scarring, or expression lines, Dr. Lawrence will direct you toward the treatments that actually address those.

Treatment Areas

Face

The most commonly treated area.

Décolleté

The chest and upper neck, which show sun exposure early and are frequently excluded from a skincare routine.

Treatment areas are confirmed during your consultation.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

What Patients Often Notice

Responses vary considerably and are frequently subtle. Red light therapy is cumulative, meaning that any effect develops across repeated sessions rather than after one. Some patients report a noticeable difference in how their skin looks and feels. Others notice no measurable change. This is a supportive treatment with modest expected effects, and it is described that way deliberately.

If you are looking for visible correction of a specific concern, Dr. Lawrence will recommend a treatment better matched to it.

Treatment Timeline

Generally brief, typically under 30 minutes.

No visible change and no recovery period. Patients return to normal activity, including applying makeup, immediately.

Any benefit develops across repeated sessions over weeks rather than after a single visit.

Regular sessions are what produce a cumulative effect. Your recommended frequency is determined during your consultation based on your plan.

There is no downtime associated with red light therapy.

What Happens During Your Visit

Dr. Lawrence evaluates your skin, reviews your health history and medications — including any that increase light sensitivity — and discusses your goals. This is where she will tell you whether red light therapy has a place in your plan and, if so, what role it plays alongside your other treatments.

The treatment area is cleansed and any makeup or product is removed so nothing sits between your skin and the light. Eye protection is provided and worn throughout the session.

You rest comfortably while the light is delivered to the treatment area for the session length. There is no pain. Most patients describe gentle warmth or no sensation at all. Many find the session itself restful.

You will receive written aftercare instructions before you leave, including what to watch for and when to call the office. There is no recovery period, and you may apply skincare and makeup immediately. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection remains part of caring for your skin regardless of which treatments you are receiving.

How Much Does Red Light Therapy Cost?

Cost depends on whether red light therapy is added to another treatment or scheduled as its own session, and on the frequency your plan calls for.

Your investment is reviewed with you during your Get to Know You Consultation. Because the effect is cumulative and modest, Dr. Lawrence will be candid about whether the cost of a regular schedule is a reasonable use of your budget relative to the other treatments available to you.

First Time Considering Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is marketed heavily, and much of that marketing significantly outruns the evidence. It is worth going in with an accurate picture.

What it reasonably offers: a comfortable, low-risk, no-downtime treatment that may support skin quality over time and pairs easily with the rest of your plan.

What it does not offer: correction of a specific visible concern, structural change, or a substitute for treatments that produce measurable results.

Patients who are happiest with red light therapy are those who add it to an existing plan and let it accumulate quietly. Patients who are disappointed are usually those who expected it to solve something on its own.

Your consultation will place it accurately within your plan, or recommend against it if your budget is better directed elsewhere.

Maintaining Your Results

Any effect from red light therapy depends on continued sessions. It is a maintenance treatment rather than a corrective one, and discontinuing it returns your skin to its prior trajectory.

Red light therapy does not address pigmentation, texture, scarring, laxity, volume, or lines caused by muscle movement. Patients whose concerns fall into those categories will see meaningfully more improvement from microneedling, peel treatment, or neuromodulator treatment, with red light therapy layered on as support rather than substituted in.

Daily broad-spectrum sun protection continues to matter more than any single treatment in your plan.

Why Choose Radiance Aesthetics?

Red light therapy is offered here as a supportive treatment with modest expected effects, because that is what the evidence supports. You will not be sold a series on the promise of something it cannot deliver.

Dr. Sharon Lawrence is board certified by the American Board of Surgery with advanced training in aesthetic techniques. Every treatment is placed within a plan rather than sold on its own.

If your budget is better directed toward a treatment that will actually change what is bothering you, that is what you will hear.

Red light therapy is layered into a broader strategy where it has a defined role.

We are not here to sell you comfortable treatments that change nothing. We are here to place each treatment where it actually belongs, and to say so plainly when one belongs nowhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is not a candidate?

Red light therapy is not appropriate for everyone. It is generally avoided in patients taking medications that increase light sensitivity, including certain antibiotics, retinoids, and other photosensitizing drugs; those with photosensitivity conditions such as lupus or porphyria; those with a history of skin cancer in the treatment area; and those with a seizure disorder that may be triggered by light. Pregnancy is discussed individually. Dr. Lawrence reviews your full health history and medication list during your Get to Know You Consultation and will tell you directly if treatment is not appropriate for you.

Red light therapy is among the lowest-risk treatments offered, but it is not risk-free. Reported effects include temporary redness or warmth in the treated area, mild irritation, headache, and eye strain or discomfort if appropriate eye protection is not worn. Patients taking photosensitizing medications may experience an exaggerated reaction. The most common disappointing outcome is simply no measurable benefit. Your written aftercare instructions will tell you what to watch for and when to call the office.

Individual results vary and no specific outcome can be guaranteed. Any effect from red light therapy is cumulative, developing across repeated sessions rather than after a single visit, and effects are generally subtle rather than dramatic. Some patients notice no measurable change. The evidence supporting red light therapy for skin appearance is meaningfully more modest than its marketing suggests. It is offered here as a supportive treatment within a broader plan, not as a treatment expected to correct a specific concern on its own.

Devices that deliver light for skin applications are regulated as medical devices, and individual devices carry their own specific authorizations for specific uses. A blanket claim that “red light therapy is FDA approved” is not accurate. Dr. Lawrence will discuss the device used at Radiance Aesthetics and its intended application during your consultation.

No. Most patients feel gentle warmth or nothing at all. Many find the session restful.

None. You may apply skincare and makeup and return to normal activity immediately.

Any cumulative effect depends on regular sessions. Recommended frequency is determined during your consultation and depends on the role red light therapy plays within your plan.

Yes. Red light therapy pairs readily with other treatments and is frequently used alongside them. Timing relative to other services is planned during your consultation.

Red light therapy is not offered at Radiance Aesthetics as a treatment for those concerns. Acne, pigmentation, and scarring are addressed with peel treatment, microneedling, and appropriate skincare. If those are your concerns, Dr. Lawrence will recommend accordingly.
