Hydrodermabrasion

Hydrodermabrasion

Designed for Clear, Hydrated Skin Without the Recovery

There is a version of skin care that does not require planning around it. No peeling, no redness to explain at work, no week of looking worse before looking better. Just skin that is genuinely cleaner, smoother, and better hydrated when you walk out than when you walked in.

Hydrodermabrasion is that treatment. It is the most approachable service at Radiance Aesthetics and frequently the first one patients try, because it asks almost nothing of you and delivers something visible the same day.

It is performed within a physician-led practice, which means it is planned as part of your overall skin strategy rather than sold as a standalone facial. Dr. Sharon Lawrence is board certified by the American Board of Surgery with advanced training in aesthetic technique, and she will be candid about what this treatment does and where its limits are.

Patients visit Radiance Aesthetics from across North Arlington and the surrounding communities of Bergen, Hudson, and Essex counties.

Every plan begins with a Get to Know You Consultation.

Ready to Explore Your Options?

A Get to Know You Consultation is where your plan takes shape. Dr. Lawrence will assess your skin and tell you whether hydrodermabrasion is the right starting point or whether your concerns call for something more.

What Is Hydrodermabrasion?

Hydrodermabrasion combines three things into a single treatment: gentle physical exfoliation, extraction of congestion from the pores, and infusion of hydrating and conditioning serums into freshly exfoliated skin.

Traditional microdermabrasion used abrasive crystals to sand away the surface layer, which was effective but drying and often irritating. Hydrodermabrasion accomplishes the exfoliation using water and serum-based suction instead. The surface is lifted away while the skin is simultaneously hydrated rather than stripped.

The goal is not to strip your skin clean — it is to clear what is sitting on it and in it, then put back what it needs.

Because it works mechanically with water rather than through acids, heat, or light absorbed by pigment, hydrodermabrasion is generally appropriate across skin types and among the gentlest treatments available.

The result is immediate but not permanent. Skin renews continuously, and congestion, dead cells, and dehydration return. This is a maintenance treatment, and its value comes from consistency rather than from any single session.

What Concerns Can Hydrodermabrasion Address?

Hydrodermabrasion may help improve:

What hydrodermabrasion does not address. It works at the surface, and that is a real limit. It does not fade established pigmentation or dark spots, improve scarring, soften lines caused by muscle movement, tighten laxity, or produce structural change in the skin. Results are visible immediately and fade over the following weeks. If your concern is dark spots, acne scarring, or texture with depth to it, Dr. Lawrence will recommend peel treatment or microneedling instead, and say so directly rather than selling you a series of facials.

Benefits of Hydrodermabrasion

What Patients Often Notice

Individual responses vary. Skin type, degree of congestion, hydration levels, and home skincare all influence the result. The improvement is real but surface-level and temporary, typically most visible in the days following treatment and diminishing over the weeks after. Patients who maintain a regular schedule see more consistent skin than those who treat occasionally. Deeper concerns will not respond to this treatment, and Dr. Lawrence will tell you if that is what you are dealing with.

Treatment Timeline

Generally 30 to 60 minutes depending on areas treated.

Skin typically looks brighter and feels smoother. Mild redness may be present briefly and usually settles within an hour or two.

Most patients apply makeup and return to normal activity immediately.

Clarity and smoothness are generally most noticeable in the first several days.

The effect diminishes over the following weeks as the skin renews.

Monthly treatment is a common maintenance rhythm, aligned with the skin’s natural turnover cycle. Your recommended interval is determined during your consultation.

There is no downtime associated with hydrodermabrasion.

What Happens During Treatment?

Dr. Lawrence evaluates your skin type, texture, congestion, hydration, and oil activity, and reviews your health history, medications, and current skincare. This is where she determines whether hydrodermabrasion is the right treatment for your concerns or whether you would be better served starting elsewhere.

Your skin is cleansed and any makeup removed. The treatment areas are assessed and the serum selection is confirmed based on your skin’s condition that day.

The treatment moves across the skin in stages — exfoliation, extraction, then infusion of conditioning serums. Most patients describe a cool, gentle suction sensation that is comfortable throughout. Areas with more congestion may feel slightly more pronounced during extraction.

The full treatment generally takes 30 to 60 minutes. Many patients find it relaxing.

You will receive written aftercare instructions before you leave, including what to watch for and when to call the office. Guidance generally covers keeping your routine simple for the first day, pausing strong active ingredients briefly, and applying daily broad-spectrum sun protection.

Freshly exfoliated skin is somewhat more responsive to sun exposure. Sun protection remains the most consistently useful thing you do for your skin.

How Much Does Hydrodermabrasion Cost?

Cost depends on the areas treated and whether the treatment is scheduled on its own or combined with another service. Because the value of this treatment comes from consistency, the practical question is usually the cost of a regular schedule rather than a single visit.

Your investment is reviewed with you during your Get to Know You Consultation.

First Time Considering Hydrodermabrasion?

This is a good first treatment, and it is worth understanding why.

It carries very little risk, requires no recovery, and produces something you can see the same day. That makes it a reasonable way to begin working with a provider before committing to treatments with more involved recovery or higher investment.

What it is not is a solution to a structural concern. Patients occasionally book a series of facials hoping to resolve acne scarring or years of accumulated sun damage, and that is not what this treatment does. Recognizing the difference is what keeps you from spending a year on the wrong thing.

Your consultation will place hydrodermabrasion accurately — as a strong maintenance treatment, an excellent entry point, and the wrong tool for concerns that live deeper than the surface.

Maintaining Your Results

Skin renews continuously. Congestion, surface buildup, and dehydration return, which is why hydrodermabrasion is a maintenance treatment rather than a corrective one.

Most patients maintain results with regular treatment on a schedule set during their consultation, supported by an appropriate home routine and daily sun protection.

Hydrodermabrasion does not address pigmentation, scarring, laxity, volume, or lines caused by muscle movement. Patients whose concerns extend into those categories generally see more complete improvement from a plan built around peel treatment, microneedling, or neuromodulator treatment, with hydrodermabrasion used for upkeep between them.

Why Choose Radiance Aesthetics?

Dr. Sharon Lawrence is board certified by the American Board of Surgery with advanced training in aesthetic techniques. Even the gentlest treatment is placed within a plan here rather than sold on its own.

Hydrodermabrasion does not rely on acids, heat, or light absorbed by surface pigment, making it a considered option for patients whose skin requires more caution elsewhere.

You will be told plainly that this treatment works at the surface, and directed elsewhere if your concern is deeper than that.

Regular treatment means Dr. Lawrence sees how your skin changes over time, which makes every subsequent recommendation better informed.

We are not here to sell you a standing appointment for a concern this cannot reach. We are here to keep your skin in good condition, and to be direct about when it needs something more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is not a candidate?

Hydrodermabrasion is among the gentlest treatments offered, but it is not appropriate for everyone. It is generally avoided in patients with an active skin infection or active cold sore outbreak; those with severe active inflammatory acne, an active rosacea flare, or open lesions in the treatment area; those with sunburned or significantly irritated skin; those who have used isotretinoin recently; and those with a known allergy to ingredients in the treatment serums, several of which commonly contain exfoliating acids. Dr. Lawrence reviews your health history and medications during your Get to Know You Consultation and will tell you directly if treatment should be postponed or avoided.

Reported effects include temporary redness, mild sensitivity, tightness, and dryness following treatment. Some patients experience a temporary increase in breakouts as congestion clears. Less commonly, patients experience prolonged irritation, allergic reaction to a serum ingredient, or reactivation of the herpes simplex virus in those with a history of cold sores. Excessive suction or over-treatment can cause bruising or irritation. Your written aftercare instructions will tell you what to watch for and when to call the office.

Individual results vary and no specific outcome can be guaranteed. Improvement in clarity, smoothness, and hydration is typically visible the same day and most noticeable in the days following treatment. The effect is surface-level and temporary, diminishing over the following weeks as the skin renews. Hydrodermabrasion does not fade established pigmentation, improve scarring, or produce structural change. Patients treating on a regular schedule maintain more consistent skin condition than those treating occasionally.

HydraFacial® is a specific branded device. Hydrodermabrasion is the category of treatment — water and serum-based exfoliation with extraction and infusion. The treatments share an approach. If the specific device matters to you, ask at your consultation.

Generally, yes. Hydrodermabrasion works mechanically rather than through light absorbed by surface pigment, which makes it one of the more universally appropriate treatments available. Candidacy is confirmed during your consultation.
